People in Alton are rallying around families whose flats have been hit by fire.
The damaged homes can be seen above the Boots opticians and hearing care centre in the High Street but they are accessed from Vicarage Hill.
Bus services were cancelled as fire crews dealt with the blaze. A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Firefighters were called to reports of a fire in a second-floor flat on Vicarage Hill at 6pm on Monday, May 18.
“Crews used one hose and two jets to extinguish the fire, while ventilation fans were deployed to clear smoke from the premises.
“Crews returned to their stations following the stop message, which was received at 8.30pm.”
The team at the pub next door, The Bakers Arms, were praised for their efforts by a relative of one of the families affected.
Posting on Facebook, Estelle Dawson said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to the people from The Bakers Arms who alerted my son and granddaughter and helped them get out safely.
“Their flat was saved from the fire but had a lot of smoke damage. I’m just so glad all got out safe.”
The Alton Foodbank offered to help with food and other essentials, resident Pete Blackman said he had a corner sofa to give away free to any family in need of furniture, and the Alton Community Cupboard urged the families to get in touch.
A spokesperson said: “Alton Community Cupboard is committed to serving our community in every way we can, providing food, groceries and connections to additional resources for those in need. Our service is free and open to everyone, with no registration necessary.”
