Heatwave changes Waverley bin collection times

Refuse crews across Waverley are continuing to operate at considerably earlier hours than usual as the  summer heatwave shows little sign of relenting  – and people should leave their bins out overnight to ensure they get collected.

The crews are being sent out of their runs earlier than normal to avoid the hottest parts of the day.

Waverley Borough Council’s waste management contract is held by Biffa and they have been working together to draw up plans to ensure the continued well-being of those out and about on the collection runs – and the needs of residents.

The council’s website reads: “With prolonged warm weather forecast across Waverley, our collection crews will be starting rounds earlier than usual to avoid the hottest part of the day. 

“Please ensure your bins are out as early as possible, preferably the evening before your scheduled collection.”

The council suggests placing bins outside your homes, with the lids closed, by 6am on scheduled collection days  – however during the current hot spell it recommends being extra vigilant and leaving them out overnight.

A Waverley Borough Council spokesperson, said: “”We are working with our waste contractor Biffa to ensure waste collections are not disrupted in the hot weather. 

“Working in very high temperatures can be particularly challenging for the crews and starting earlier in the day means crews can get much of their physically demanding work done before the hottest part of the afternoon.

 “While those early starts require commitment from staff, they are an important way of helping to protect their health and wellbeing during heatwaves. 

“We’re extremely grateful for the work the crews do to keep services running for residents and also want to thank all our residents for their patience and cooperation.”
